Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty signed a cooperation agreement in Nouakchott on Friday, October 30, 2026, to support farmers in the commune of Ouadane and protect its farming depressions, under funding from the "Ambdra" project, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.
The mayor of Ouadane listed three main needs: 14 more kilometres of metal fencing to complete the 24 kilometres required, ten guards for four months, and ten flexible drinking-water tanks for people working in the farming areas.
The mayor said farmers had turned to the depressions, known locally as "lekrayer", after they filled with rainwater, but face the threat of stray animals and need to secure their crops and drinking water.
The environment ministry's secretary-general said the agreement responds to requests made by Ouadane residents and farmers during the president's visit to the town on September 21, 2026, and is part of efforts to set up a management system for the Richat Structure protected area.
His agriculture counterpart called for faster delivery of the planned interventions to protect cultivated land and support smallholders with guarding and essential services.
