Madar (Nouakchott) - President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani travels on Thursday, November 5, 2026, to the Nouakchott South region to inspect ongoing projects and launch others, including the second phase of the Nouakchott modernisation programme, whose first phase the government says is nearly complete, the independent Alakhbar agency reported.
According to official sources cited by the agency, the president is due to meet representatives of residents on Friday night to hear their views on public services and their main expectations. The visit is part of regional tours the president began in November 2025, starting with Hodh Ech Chargui, followed by Gorgol, Adrar and Inchiri.
The ministerial committee preparing the second phase, chaired by Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay, noted on October 22 that most components of the first phase of the Nouakchott development programme had been completed, with delays in some that were not specified. The 2027 draft budget allocates 11.59 billion new ouguiyas to the second phase.
In the regions, consultations on the second phase of the emergency programme for access to essential services, led by ministerial missions to eleven regions, revealed an uneven record: in Hodh El Gharbi, 259 of 475 interventions were completed and 14 had not started; in Gorgol, completion stood at 61% with 67% of the timeline elapsed; in Brakna, execution ranged from 100% for water and sanitation to 42% for youth and sports.
The consultations produced a large volume of new requests, with Gorgol alone recording about 520, of which 451 were new, while the equipment minister acknowledged in Tidjikja that completing the planned projects "does not necessarily meet all of citizens' needs." The first phase of the emergency programme continues until March, with the second due to start early next year.
The visit caps a government week in which the cabinet resumed its weekly meetings on Wednesday after last week's pause, ahead of the prime minister's presentation of his government's record and policy orientations to the National Assembly on Saturday.
