Mauritania's Advertising Regulatory Authority has adopted new measures to regulate cosmetics advertising, including a ban on promoting home-made mixtures without prior health authorisation, particularly products marketed to change or lighten skin colour.

The new rules require those concerned to provide proof of the products' origin and effectiveness, and prohibit presenting cosmetics as treatments for diseases or using misleading images and comparisons to influence consumers.

The measures also cover advertising on social media and require influencers to make clear when content is commercial, with offenders facing the penalties provided for in the advertising law.
