Madar (International) - Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the US midterm elections held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, a result the Associated Press described as "a decisive rebuke" of Republican governance in Washington that ushers in a new era of congressional resistance to President Donald Trump.
Democrats flipped seats in states that had voted Republican for decades, including Texas, where James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton for a Senate seat in a state where no Democrat had won statewide office in more than 30 years, and Kansas, where Adam Hamilton becomes the state's first Democratic senator since 1932. Republican Senator Susan Collins lost her seat in Maine.
In Michigan, progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers, becoming, according to Reuters, the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. Results in Alaska and Mississippi were still pending, according to AP, which has not yet published a final seat count.
AP's survey of voters found that about three-quarters described the economy as "not so good" or "poor," and about 8 in 10 said inflation had caused their household financial hardship; the cost of living and government corruption weighed more heavily than immigration policy or the war in Iran.
Trump wrote on his social media platform before polls closed on the West Coast that he "wasn't on the Ballot," vowing to veto Democratic legislation. In a Fox News interview he said voters "didn't like the candidates," but said he would accept the results.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called the results a "generational remake of the Senate map," while House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, in line to become the first Black speaker, said "the American people are crying out for transformational change." Democratic leaders have signalled plans to investigate administration officials, without ruling out impeachment.
