The organisation SOS Esclaves has welcomed the decision to hold a national tribute to its late founder, Boubacar Ould Messaoud, planned for December 2 to coincide with the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, calling it recognition of his career defending human rights and fighting slavery.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organisation praised the initiative of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, saying the tribute goes beyond the late founder himself to honour the human rights and civil society activists who have fought for freedom and human dignity.
It called for continued work to consolidate its founder's legacy by stepping up efforts to eradicate slavery and its legacies, obtain justice for its victims and strengthen their legal and social protection.
