Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's national campaign to distribute long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, aimed at strengthening malaria prevention, was launched on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in the town of Rosso, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

The campaign aims to distribute 1,158,400 nets to 2,059,475 people in 351,111 households across 22 departments in the Hodh Ech Chargui, Hodh El Gharbi, Assaba, Gorgol, Guidimakha and Trarza regions.

The launch was led by the health minister's adviser, Ali Ould Emeid, with the Trarza governor's adviser for economic affairs, Mohamed Sid Merzouk, in the presence of the World Health Organization representative, administrative authorities and local officials.

The adviser said fighting malaria is central among health priorities because of the burden it places on families and health facilities, particularly in the most exposed areas, and praised support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the WHO.

National malaria programme coordinator Bab Ould Bell said treated nets are an effective means of prevention, protecting people while they sleep and limiting the spread of the mosquitoes that carry the disease. The campaign began in Guidimakha on Monday for ten days.
