Madar (Nouakchott) - A number of Mauritanian doctors have complained of being dropped from the lists of trainees sent to Algeria for medical specialisation, despite completing their applications on the dedicated platform and appearing on lists directed to Algeria, the Sahara Medias agency reported on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

Results were announced in August for 144 places in Algeria and 49 in Morocco. According to official documents seen by the agency, the higher education ministry sent a list of 41 doctors on September 17, followed by a supplementary list of 23 doctors on October 1.

The doctors say the lists were later changed, and that after a meeting with the higher education minister they were told registration in Algeria was "no longer available", without being given reasons. They added that the health ministry's requirement for written administrative permission for civil servants had complicated the situation for several of them.

The doctors, who have approached the ministry and the Mauritanian embassy in Algiers, are calling for an explanation of their exclusion, disclosure of the selection criteria and a transparent handling of the case that guarantees equal opportunity. The ministry has not yet issued an official explanation.
