Madar (Dakar) - Pastef, which holds a majority in Senegal's National Assembly, rejected the 2026 amended budget bill in its current form during a finance committee meeting, ahead of its plenary review on Tuesday.

The party cited disagreements over budget choices and financing mechanisms, as well as insufficient guarantees given to parliament. It called for a review of cuts affecting health, education, infrastructure and water, stressing the need to protect citizens' purchasing power and lower energy costs.

The party, which holds 130 of the 165 seats in the National Assembly, said it was ready for dialogue with the government before the plenary session in a bid to reach an agreement on the budget.

The dispute comes as Senegalese authorities seek to tackle a public debt crisis, with debt estimated at around 132% of gross domestic product, putting the government's financial choices under growing pressure.
