Madar (Algiers) - Algeria has instructed urea producers to stop exporting to France, five diplomatic and fertiliser industry sources told Reuters.

Six French and European diplomats cited by the agency said the move follows near-blanket informal restrictions imposed by Algeria in late July on imports of French goods.

Urea is a nitrogen-rich agricultural fertiliser, typically containing about 46% nitrogen, and usually comes as white granules. It is used to boost plant growth, especially leaves and stems, and supports the production of staple crops such as wheat, maize and vegetables.

Algeria is one of the main producers and exporters of urea, making the halt of exports to France a notable development in trade relations between the two countries.
