Madar (Bamako) - Mali's National Transitional Council (CNT) on Thursday, October 22, 2026, ratified the August 13 ordinance amending the Persons and Family Code, which extends deprivation of nationality to Malians by origin as well as naturalised citizens, by 119 votes of members present, according to a CNT statement reported by the Koaci website.

The measure targets in particular allegiance to a foreign state, collaboration with hostile, secessionist or terrorist organisations and participation in terrorist acts, after the authorities judged the framework in place since the law of December 30, 2011 to be insufficient.

Until now, deprivation of nationality applied only to naturalised persons. The new text provides that it cannot be imposed if it would leave the person stateless, according to the African Press Agency (APA).

The transitional government adopted the draft ordinance in the Council of Ministers on July 17. The ordinance has been in force since its adoption, with ratification preventing it from lapsing, the same source said.
