Madar (International) - French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Thursday that 217 people had been jailed out of 2,700 held in custody over the violence and looting that hit France last weekend, calling it an "extremely firm response, unprecedented".

Fresh clashes broke out in Paris on Sunday after a wave of unrest, among the worst the country has seen in years, linked to protests over rising prices, which left one protester dead and led to more than 2,000 arrests, while more than 600 police officers were injured, according to Reuters.

Saturday's demonstrations in several French cities turned into riots, with looting and vandalism of shops, a town hall building set on fire and graffiti on walls, amid violent clashes between protesters and police.

One protester died of cardiac arrest during the protests in Paris, while the Interior Ministry reported more than 2,000 arrests across the country and more than 600 police officers injured.
