Madar (Rabat) - King Mohammed VI chaired a working meeting at the Royal Palace in Rabat on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, on the progress of the Nador West Med port, whose first container terminal is expected to start operating within days, and on the Tanger Med 3 project, according to a Royal Cabinet statement reported by Hespress.
According to the statement, Nador West Med has attracted 54 billion dirhams in public and private investment. Its first terminal will have an annual capacity of 3.5 million containers, while a second, 1.8-million-container terminal is due to enter service in April 2027. The complex will also include a hydrocarbons terminal, storage of up to 4 million cubic metres and a liquefied natural gas terminal able to handle up to 5 billion cubic metres a year.
The project is expected to create 14,000 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs in the near term; its industrial zone has one factory in operation and three under construction.
The Royal Cabinet also announced that construction will soon begin on Tanger Med 3, west of Tanger Med 2, at an estimated cost of 8 billion dirhams, with 1,200 metres of quays and 4.5 million containers of additional annual capacity, after a concession agreement was signed with Maersk-APM. The expansion could raise Tanger Med's total capacity to 20 million containers a year.
The King stressed that the projects' economic and social benefits must reach all the provinces concerned and called for faster vocational training programmes to help young people find jobs in the new industries.
