A delegation of the Mauritanian Journalists' Union discussed on Tuesday with the Mauritanian Judges' Club ways to strengthen cooperation and frame media coverage of court cases, in line with legal and professional rules and the public's right to information.
The union delegation was led by its president and the judges' club delegation by its secretary general.
The talks covered joint training courses and activities to develop journalists' skills in covering cases before the courts, improve accuracy in the use of legal terms and explain the legal and professional rules on reporting cases under investigation and on investigative journalism.
According to a briefing from the union, the two sides also discussed developing relations between media organisations and the judiciary, building mutual understanding and addressing problems that may arise from media coverage of court cases.
The union said the meeting is part of its efforts to strengthen journalists' professional training and legal culture, support freedom of expression, protect journalists at work and balance the demands of journalism with the guarantees of justice and the rule of law.
