MP and former presidential candidate El Id Mohameden stressed the need to respect limits on presidential terms, saying President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani bears responsibility for safeguarding the constitutional guarantees he swore to uphold.
Speaking at a political seminar organised by the National Rally for Reform and Development (Tewassoul), he said limiting the presidential term to five years is a constitutional gain that should neither be reopened for debate nor reversed.
He said raising the issue of extending terms runs counter to the political consensus that led to adopting these rules, and warned of the consequences of any retreat from the country's democratic gains.
He called for political dialogue to remain governed by respect for the constitution and the strengthening of peaceful transfers of power, avoiding any steps that could drag the country into political tension or crisis.
