Madar (Nouakchott) - A training workshop for civil society on the risks of violent extremism and its link with climate change opened in Aioun, Hodh El Gharbi region, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, organised by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Original Education with the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

Isselmou Ould Babah, adviser to the minister and head of the national cell against extremism, said the government had adopted a comprehensive plan combining security and intellectual approaches, adding that Mauritania has recorded no terrorist attacks since 2011.

UNICRI's principal adviser said the workshop aims to deepen debate on the possible effects of climate variability on violent extremism, and presented results of research carried out in the two Hodh regions and Guidimakha, which the agency did not detail.

The opening was attended by administrative and local officials, imams and civil society representatives.
