Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritanian telecoms operator Rimatel launched its 5G network on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in three cities - Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and Rosso - and plans to extend it to the rest of the country before next Ramadan, its managers said, according to the Al-Akhbar news agency.
The launch took place at a ceremony at the old Mokhtar Ould Daddah conference palace, where the operator celebrated 7 as the new first digit of its numbers. Its director general, Mohamed Ahmed Abderrahmane, called 7 a "spiritual number".
The president of the national employers' union officially launched the service in the presence of the digital transformation minister, the Al-Wiam agency reported. On the sidelines, Rimatel signed an agreement with Orange covering international services and staff training.
The telecoms regulator signed specifications on May 7 with the four operators holding 5G licences, worth about 11 billion old ouguiyas in total: Mauritel (3 billion), Rimatel (2.9 billion), Chinguitel (2.6 billion) and Mattel (2.3 billion). Rimatel did not announce prices or coverage rates.
