Madar (Dakar) - Senegal's Interior Minister Mouhamadou Makhtar Cisse said on Thursday, October 22, 2026, that local elections will "most likely" take place by the end of 2027, "unless the National Assembly decides otherwise", according to remarks on public broadcaster RTS 1 reported by Seneweb.

The minister noted that the National Assembly has the power to postpone the elections to another year, adding that the start of the electoral process depends on a decree from the President of the Republic.

He said the issue of expiring identity cards was "under control", the electoral roll was in order and the General Directorate of Elections was ready, and urged political actors to consult on the timetable, saying elections have traditionally been organised by broad consensus.

Senegal's current local councils were elected on January 23, 2022. No official date or decree convening voters has been announced so far.
