Madar (Nouakchott) - Mines and Industry Minister Edi Ould Zein, accompanied by the governor of Inchiri, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, began a two-day field visit to Tasiast Mauritania's headquarters to review mining conditions, "strengthen trust between the government and investors" and stress strict compliance with the law, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported.
The minister received briefings on the company's history, social programmes, worker safety measures and health services, and toured facilities including water tanks, the residential compound, the civil protection centre and the clinic.
The president of the Inchiri regional council called for development programmes in the region and priority for local youth in the company's jobs, while the mayor of Benichab said the company's contributions in the region remain "below expectations" despite projects carried out last year, including a market and a slaughterhouse in Benichab and classrooms in Akjoujt.
The company's vice president for external relations said Mauritanians make up 98% of its workforce, that it built 19 classrooms in Akjoujt last year as well as a modern market and slaughterhouse, and that it would continue its social programmes. The visit comes two days after the finance minister met a company delegation on its contribution to budget revenue.
