Madar (Nouakchott) - The regional emergency committee of Trarza, in southern Mauritania, met under the chairmanship of the wali (governor) to review precautionary measures against a possible rise in the level of the Senegal River, the Sahara Medias agency reported on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The meeting discussed strengthening readiness and coordination between administrative authorities, technical services and security forces to ensure rapid intervention and protect residents and their property should the situation develop.

The wali stressed the need to monitor the river level, raise vigilance and take the necessary measures in time, while keeping residents informed of confirmed developments through official channels.

In Senegal's Matam region, on the opposite bank, authorities took preventive measures last week amid flood fears linked to water releases from the Manantali dam.
