Madar (Nouakchott) - The governor (wali) of Trarza region, Ahmedna Ould Sid Be, on Thursday, 5 November 2026, launched a region-wide clean-up campaign starting in the city of Rosso, with administrative and security services, businesses and civil society taking part, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).

The governor said the campaign was a response to the call by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, during his recent visit to Adrar and Inchiri regions, for a "national cleanliness drive".

The campaign will cover all of Rosso's neighbourhoods and streets and its "black spots", and will extend from 7 November to all of the region's districts before moving on to the main towns of its municipalities.

The national army, the National Guard, the security forces, civil protection and the Mauritanian Red Crescent are taking part, alongside public administrations, institutions, companies and civil society groups.

According to AMI, the area where the campaign began was assigned to the National Guard, while other areas went to the army, including "Kilometre 7" and the "fishermen's quarter", among the parts of the city worst affected by accumulated waste.

The governor urged participants to clean and monitor their assigned areas until they are handed over to committees responsible for keeping the operation going under the municipality's supervision. The city's cleanliness "cannot be achieved by the efforts of the public authorities alone", he said, calling on every resident to take responsibility, starting with their own home, street and neighbourhood.

After the launch, the governor visited several waste collection points and met residents, accompanied by the prefect of Rosso, the vice-president of the Trarza regional council, the mayor of Rosso, heads of regional services and security chiefs.

The campaign comes as President Ghazouani said on Thursday evening in Nouakchott that the company in charge of cleaning the capital had yet to reach the required standard.
