The National Rally for Reform and Development (Tewassoul) said several families in Nouakchott's Dar Naim district have had to leave their homes because of accumulated water, while others live amid stagnant water, mosquitoes and piles of rubbish.

The party said its parliamentary group saw the situation during a field visit to affected neighbourhoods, including the Zeid Ibn Haritha school, flooded by rain and groundwater, before moving on to the "Hayat Jedida" neighbourhoods of Toujounine district.

Residents there raised several problems, notably the high cost of living, poor services and insecurity, as well as a shortage of school buildings, teachers and educational supervision, the party added.

The visit, which included representatives of the party's federations and sections in Nouakchott North, is part of its activities for the new political season.
