Madar (Nouakchott) - The governor of Mauritania's Guidimakha region held a meeting with teachers and pupils' parents in Selibaby on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, stressing the need for the school uniform, which he said reduces disparities between pupils and strengthens social cohesion in line with the goals of the 'republican school', the Mauritanian News Agency reported.
The governor said the meeting reaffirmed that the uniform is compulsory, adding that he understood citizens' living conditions and noting efforts by the municipality and other bodies, while stressing that parents must contribute to providing it.
He said a quantity of uniforms would be distributed to some schools according to set criteria; the agency did not give the number of uniforms or schools involved.
