The defence team of retired General Lebat Ould Maiouf has criticised the continued stalling of proceedings in his case, saying that exceeding the legal deadlines undermines the rights of their client, who is in pre-trial detention, and raises questions about the course of the charges against him.

In a statement signed by lawyer Mohamed Mbareck Mohamed Vall, the defence said the public prosecution had not complied with the deadline set by Article 175 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which gives it eight days to submit its requests after the case file is referred to it.

The lawyers called on the prosecution to make up for the delay and rule on the proceedings without further delay, reaffirming their commitment to fair-trial guarantees and the presumption of innocence, and stressing that their client's detention must not turn into a violation of his right to respect for legal deadlines and the rights of the defence.
