Madar (Nouakchott) - The governor of Mauritania's Gorgol region, Mohamed El Moctar Ould Abdi, has told owners of vacant plots in the region to fence and develop them "as soon as possible", warning that undeveloped plots "will face measures that could go as far as confiscation, in accordance with the regulations in force", the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported on Sunday, November 8, 2026.
The governor was speaking at a meeting he chaired on Saturday evening in the city of Kaédi with heads of regional services and neighbourhood chiefs, devoted to ways of making the second phase of the town clean-up campaign a success and increasing citizens' involvement in improving the urban environment.
He said the clean-up campaign "requires everyone's combined efforts", adding that the authorities would provide the necessary resources to support the operation and ensure its success, and called on all stakeholders, bodies and citizens to take part.
He urged everyone to "redouble their efforts and work in a spirit of responsibility and cooperation" to make Gorgol's towns "clean towns worthy of their residents that reflect the region's civilised face".
The committees overseeing the operation have begun monitoring the second phase of the campaign, which aims to improve cleanliness in neighbourhoods as well as environmental and health conditions, according to the same source.
The meeting was attended by the prefect of Kaédi district, the governor's advisers, heads of regional services and leaders of the security and military authorities.
Authorities in Kaédi had earlier reported the removal of 6,860 tonnes of waste in the first phase of the campaign.
