Madar (Nouakchott) - The first phase of a popular clean-up drive in the city of Kaedi ended on Monday evening, October 19, 2026, after covering two thirds of the city's districts and removing 6,860 tonnes of waste, Kaedi prefect Sidna Ould Zein El Abidine told the Mauritanian News Agency.
Launched the previous Saturday under the supervision of the Gorgol governor, the operation treated 25 black spots, cleared 12 secondary dumps and three outer dumps, and made 343 waste-transport trips using ten vehicles and 1,200 containers, with 48 workers taking part, the prefect said.
The drive was accompanied by measures to enforce cleanliness rules, including fines for offenders. The end of the first phase "does not mean the end of the effort", he said.
The campaign is part of the national clean-up drive called for by the president, with operations continuing in Nouakchott and inland cities.
