Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's Minister of Fisheries and Maritime and Port Infrastructure, Aissata Lam, on the morning of Tuesday, October 27, 2026, made a field visit to the Autonomous Port of Nouakchott, known as the "Port of Friendship", to review its operations, assess its performance and look at its main challenges and prospects for developing port services, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

At an enlarged meeting with the port's managers, staff and sector players, the minister heard a presentation by the port's director general on its 2025 activity indicators. According to the presentation, the port provides more than 2,000 jobs and hosts more than 30 companies working in the port sector.

The head of the port labour management company SOGETRAP-SA presented the reform of dock labour. Set up in 2022, the company is a partnership between the port, representing the state with a 51% stake, and handling companies with 49%, following decisions of an interministerial committee formed in 2021 on the president's instructions.

The tour took in the breakwaters in the port's south-western section and the Nouakchott container company, whose director briefed the minister on its operations.
