Madar (Nouakchott) - Opposition MP El Id Ould Mohameden has held President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani responsible for preserving Mauritania's constitution and its democratic gains, saying any move affecting the constitution would make the head of state responsible for its political and moral consequences.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Joud party in Nouakchott on Friday evening, he said the peaceful transfer of power is one of the main gains achieved through years of sacrifice and struggle by the Mauritanian opposition.
He stressed that the primary responsibility for protecting the constitution lies with the president, asking why he would accept his political majority backing a course that could, in his words, lead to a breach of the constitution.
Recalling 2018, which he said saw a similar push in favour of former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, he added that those encouraging the current president towards what he called a breach of the constitution were, in his view, serving their own interests rather than defending the president himself.
