Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's national meteorological office on Friday evening, October 23, 2026, issued a warning of a marked drop in horizontal visibility due to dust and sandstorms from Friday until October 28, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported.

The office said western regions and the coastal strip were already seeing reduced visibility from suspended dust, which is expected to spread to other parts of the country in the coming days, with visibility gradually improving nationwide on October 27 and 28.

It urged people with asthma and respiratory diseases, children and the elderly to take every precaution against breathing in dust, and advised road users to be careful, slow down and switch on hazard lights when visibility is nil, watching out for sand dunes encroaching on main roads.

It also called on sailors, fishermen and the public to be cautious and follow its regular bulletins.
