Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania has renewed its commitment to the global "30x30" goal of protecting at least 30% of the world's land and sea by 2030, at a panel on speeding up West African efforts on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), the Al-Wiam news agency reported on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Ahmed Hamada Ezzein, a chargé de mission at the environment ministry, said Mauritania was pursuing efforts to protect marine and coastal biodiversity, building on assets such as the Banc d'Arguin and Diawling national parks and the Baie de l'Etoile nature reserve.

He said the country was working to expand its protected-area network through an integrated national strategy, studying new marine protected areas and improving the management of designated zones.

He also stressed cooperation with Senegal, mobilising technical and financial partners and involving local communities, in support of food security and the blue economy.
