Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania has strongly condemned what it described as an attempt by the Houthi militia to target the Medina region with a ballistic missile, according to a statement issued on Friday evening, 6 November 2026, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad and carried by the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).
In the statement, the ministry affirmed Mauritania's full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures the kingdom takes "to protect its security and the integrity of its territory".
The statement said that targeting Medina, a holy city that is home to the Prophet's Mosque and receives pilgrims and visitors, amounts to "an unacceptable violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites and a threat to the security and peace of mind of Muslims".
Mauritania reiterated, according to the statement, "its firm position calling for the protection of holy sites, respect for the sovereignty of states, and avoiding anything that could undermine security and stability in the region". The statement gave no details on the timing or outcome of the attempt.
The statement comes less than two weeks after Mauritania condemned ballistic missile launches toward Saudi Arabia in a statement issued on the night of Sunday 25 October.
