Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's telecommunications regulator has fined the country's three mobile operators a total of more than 4.2 billion old ouguiyas over persistent failures to meet their obligations on the quality of service provided to subscribers.
In a statement, the regulator said it had found that Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel were in breach of their legal and regulatory obligations, despite a public formal notice previously sent to them.
It gave the operators concerned an additional four months to remedy the shortcomings identified and meet the obligations required of them.
The fines break down as follows: Mauritel, 2,620,971,180 old ouguiyas; Mattel, 1,087,914,010 old ouguiyas; Chinguitel, 503,712,380 old ouguiyas.
The regulator warned that failure to comply with the conditions and requirements set could expose the operators to tougher penalties, up to the withdrawal of their licence, under the laws governing the country's telecommunications sector.
