Madar (Algiers) - Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday decided to send units of the National People's Army to the Republic of Niger to protect the two countries' common energy and economic interests, according to a presidency statement carried by the official APS news agency.

The decision responds to a request from the Nigerien authorities and is based on the Constitution, in particular its Article 91, following the approval by the Council of the Nation and the National People's Assembly of sending military units abroad, the statement said.

Both chambers of parliament approved the president's notification on sending army units to Niger on Sunday, October 25.

The statement did not specify the number of units involved, when they would be deployed, or the type of sites they will be tasked with protecting.
