Madar (Abuja) - The death toll from the armed attack on the village of Binnari in Taraba state, eastern Nigeria, has risen to 50 according to survivors who reported finding more bodies, while Amnesty International said 52 people were killed.
A village resident said he found seven bodies on Friday and another 43 in the river on Saturday. Survivors said several residents, including women and children, drowned while trying to flee the gunmen, who stormed the village on motorcycles and looted shops.
Amnesty International accused the Nigerian authorities of failing to protect rural communities and to hold those responsible for the attacks to account, warning that the continued lack of prosecutions is entrenching impunity.
