Madar (Mbour) - Senegal's minister in charge of livestock, Ousmane Diagne, has officially launched the 2026-2027 national livestock vaccination campaign in Ndiaganiao, in the western department of Mbour, Senegalese news site Seneweb reported on Saturday, 24 October 2026.

The campaign aims to vaccinate 8 million sheep and goats, 3.1 million cattle, 300,000 horses and 2 million rural poultry, according to the same source.

It targets five priority diseases: peste des petits ruminants, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, lumpy skin disease, African horse sickness and Newcastle disease.

The previous 2025-2026 campaign vaccinated 6,796,205 sheep and goats against peste des petits ruminants, 2,667,211 cattle against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, 263,452 horses and 1,597,889 poultry, according to figures the minister presented in September, reported by the Senegalese news agency APS.

"Protecting our livestock means protecting our economy, our food security and the livelihoods of millions of Senegalese," Diagne said at the launch, calling vaccination "our first line of defence" and saying that "no area should be left out". He said the state would ensure vaccines are available and strengthen equipment, infrastructure and the cold chain.

Ndiaganiao mayor Tening Sene asked for more vaccination parks, livestock markets and modern slaughter facilities, as well as better access to financing for herders, while welcoming a new vaccination park and a veterinary post under construction.
