Madar (Dakar) - Armed men burst into a mining perimeter in Faranding, in the Saraya department of Senegal's south-eastern Kedougou region, overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, 28 October 2026, seriously assaulting a Chinese national before making off with 6.7 million CFA francs, a security source told the Senegalese Press Agency (APS), as reported by Le Soleil.
According to the source, the attack took place at around 2 a.m. at a base operated by a Chinese company. Six gunmen allegedly fired shots into the air and forced the guard on a watchtower to come down at gunpoint.
Calls for help were heard from the staff quarters, where a Chinese national in his forties, described as the base's treasurer, was allegedly assaulted; he was found only after the attackers had left and was evacuated for treatment. The exact circumstances and the extent of the losses have yet to be established.
The attackers, whose identity and whereabouts remain unknown, were reportedly armed with rifles and handguns. Defence and security forces were deployed to carry out initial findings and search the area, and an investigation is under way.
