Madar (Dakar) - Senegal's joint bakery unions have threatened to stop producing bread across the country in the first week of November 2026 if the government does not take measures to support the sector, news site PressAfrik reported on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The joint platform brings together four unions, the FNBS, RBS Authentique, RBS and CNBS. It says rising costs are hurting bakeries, which it says are losing money on every batch, the site reported.
The unions want a single bread price of 200 CFA francs nationwide, with the loaf weight reduced proportionally in other regions, or, if the current system is kept, a cut of at least 3,000 CFA francs in the price of a bag of flour.
They are also calling for tax relief suited to the sector's crisis and strict enforcement of decree no. 2277, particularly its provisions on distribution and labelling of bread quality and weight.
The unions have sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Trade Minister requesting an urgent inter-ministerial council, and have begun a nationwide tour to mobilise their members, according to PressAfrik.
