Madar (Dakar) - Senegal's National Assembly on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, corrected the count of the vote that led to the rejection of the amended 2026 finance bill, raising the number of votes for rejection from 109 to 126, Le Soleil reported.

In a corrective statement, the Assembly said "a technical problem during the initial count of the votes" meant that 17 proxy votes were not included in the result of the vote on the preliminary motion during the examination of bill no. 40/2026. After verification, they were added to the 109 votes first announced.

The Assembly said the aim was to "restore the accuracy of the results of the ballot and ensure fair and transparent information". According to the paper, the statement did not give corrected figures for votes against or abstentions.

Lawmakers rejected the bill and the government's two amendments on Tuesday, a vote that casts doubt on the USD 2.2 billion financing programme expected from the International Monetary Fund.

Ahead of the vote, three ministers warned of the consequences of a blockage at a news conference in Mbacke on Monday, 2 November. Microfinance and Social and Solidarity Economy Minister Alioune Badara Dione said Touba would lose CFA 3 billion earmarked for Islamic finance, adding that "the suffering of Senegalese people must not be an election campaign weapon", according to Le Soleil.

Urban Planning and Local Authorities Minister Moussa Balla Fofana said the project to transfer water from Lake Guiers to Touba had been pushed back to the 2027 budget, while minister Idrissa Samb warned that rejection would put the construction of training centres at risk and freeze scholarships.

Separately, Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo received the president of the UEMOA Commission, Abdoulaye Diop, who welcomed the agreement reached with the IMF and reaffirmed the union's readiness to support Senegal and to keep advocating for it with technical and financial partners, the same paper said.
