Madar (Banjul) - Gambian immigration authorities intercepted 222 migrants, including 180 Senegalese nationals, in Sanyang and Faraba in the West Coast Region on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, according to a statement by the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) relayed by the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) and Le Soleil.

The group also included 38 Gambians, two Malaysians, one Nigerian and one Sierra Leonean, the statement said.

One person suspected of playing a role in the attempted irregular migration was arrested and detained as part of the investigation, the same source said.

After their interception, the 222 migrants were taken to an immigration centre for identification and administrative formalities, and are receiving humanitarian assistance from the Gambia Red Cross. The statement did not specify the group's intended destination.
