Madar (N'Djamena) - Former Chadian prime minister and opposition figure Succes Masra has quietly left the country to receive medical treatment, two months after being freed under a presidential pardon, Africanews reported on Thursday, October 22, 2026, citing RFI.
According to those close to him, he left N'Djamena on October 20, shortly after attending a ceremony honouring victims of the crackdown on 2022 protests that demanded a return to constitutional order. His route took him to Cameroon and then Cote d'Ivoire, where his family lives, before a planned trip to France for treatment.
His relatives insist it is not a new exile but a medical need after a year in detention, saying the trip was delayed by the renewal of his passport and by President Mahamat Idriss Deby's visit to France.
The low-key departure has nonetheless raised questions, with observers saying his party, Les Transformateurs, is adopting a cautious strategy. The pardon cancelled his sentence but did not erase his conviction, which still weighs on his political and legal situation. After leaving prison, Masra said he was ready to work with President Deby.
