Madar (International) - At least 68 people were killed on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when a high-speed train crashed into the rear of a stationary train near Urda in Toledo province, south of Madrid, derailing two carriages, according to the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, as reported by Al Jazeera and Reuters.
Regional head Emiliano Garcia-Page said about 80 people were injured, around 50 seriously and 15 critically. The crash happened on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line between an AVE train run by state operator Renfe, carrying 397 passengers, and a train run by private company Iryo with 147 passengers on board.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the LZB control system went down at around 07:00 GMT along a 63-kilometre stretch and that the Atocha control post allowed the Renfe train to resume its journey "normally" without the system being restored, calling the decision "inexplicable".
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared three days of official mourning from October 29 to 31. The crash comes nine months after a collision between trains of the same two operators on the same line killed 46 people in January. Morocco's King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolence to King Felipe VI.
