Four classrooms are under construction at Nouadhibou university, with work also under way on buildings designated for student housing and university dining. The governor of Dakhlet Nouadhibou inspected the facilities on Tuesday, October 13, according to the Mauritanian News Agency.
At a meeting with the university's staff, she discussed difficulties facing the institution and measures taken to address some of them. She also said a site had been selected for a campus under the regional development programme.
The university president outlined its structure of three faculties and an institute, with programmes covering the environment, society, fisheries and mining. The vice-president for academic and student affairs said the subjects reflected practical needs, including the study of migration and population movements.
University officials reported higher enrolment this academic year than last year. Housing, dining and teaching space are among the services needed as the institution, which began operating last year, develops.
The cabinet approved a draft decree establishing and organising the university on May 7, 2025. On October 23 that year, the National Union of Mauritanian Students criticised delays to the start of classes and uncertainty over teaching staff and essential services, calling for faster preparations. No opening date for the facilities undergoing work was announced during the current visit.
