Madar (Tunis) - Tunisia officially launched its first digital general agricultural census on Friday, October 30, 2026, covering the 2026-2027 period and expected to count about 831,000 farms, according to an estimate in an official document relayed by news site Webdo, citing La Presse.

According to the same source, field data collection will start in November and cover the whole country, with the aim of building a comprehensive, up-to-date database on farms, their location, activities, resources and production capacity.

The launch was announced by Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Minister Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh. Census takers will use tablets to collect and process data directly in the field, alongside geolocation and geographic information systems to map farms and their characteristics.

The data will cover farm structure, agricultural activities, equipment, labour and means of production. The results are meant to help the authorities target investment, adapt agricultural policy to regional needs and support small and medium-sized farms.

Emna Jellouli, representing the General Directorate of Agricultural Studies and Development, stressed the value of the data for building sector strategies on reliable information and improving the governance of development projects. Officials insisted that individual data will remain confidential and be used for statistical purposes only.
