Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Cheikh Nenni Moulaye Zein, renewed Mauritania's condemnation of continuing Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, at a Security Council open debate on "the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question" in New York on Thursday, October 15, 2026, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).

The ambassador reaffirmed Mauritania's commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including the peaceful settlement of disputes, and said the war of extermination waged on Gaza over the past three years had left more than 74,000 martyrs and 175,000 wounded, most of them women and children.

He commended the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, while noting the slow implementation of Security Council resolution 2803 on the ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of Gaza. Israeli violations of the ceasefire continued even after the resolution was adopted, he said, calling on the Council to shoulder its responsibility for international peace and security.

He also expressed Mauritania's solidarity with Syria and Lebanon in the face of Israeli violations of their sovereignty and security, calling on Israel to respect their territorial integrity, fully implement the relevant Council resolutions and withdraw immediately and permanently from the occupied Syrian Golan.
