Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritanian activists on TikTok raised 100 million old ouguiyas (about 10 million new ouguiyas) in less than 12 hours in a fundraiser launched on the morning of Sunday, November 1, 2026, by content creator Sidi Essadat to help needy patients, including people with cancer and kidney disease, cover treatment costs, according to Sahara Medias.

The donations were collected during a live broadcast in which hundreds of Mauritanians took part, one of the largest fundraisers seen on the country's social platforms in such a short time, the agency said.

It is not the first campaign led by Essadat with other activists: earlier drives bought houses for families living in huts and paid for patients to travel abroad for treatment.

Such initiatives rely on live streams and interaction with followers, a form of charity that has grown on social media in Mauritania. The latest campaign drew wide praise from bloggers and activists.
