Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's ministry of commerce and tourism has closed 19 bakeries across Nouakchott's three regions over violations linked to monopoly and speculation in bread and unjustified price rises, the ministry said, as reported by Sahara Medias on Monday, November 2, 2026.
The ministry said its field teams carried out wide inspections of bakeries in the capital, leading to the closure of 12 bakeries in Nouakchott North, 4 in Nouakchott South and 3 in Nouakchott West.
The inspections were coordinated with the ministry of mines and industry and the bakeries' federation, which pledged to respect prices and stop monopoly and speculation practices.
The ministry said field inspections continue around the clock to control prices and combat fraud, speculation and monopoly.
