Madar (Niamey) - A first Algerian military convoy escorting about sixty fuel tankers reached Agadez in northern Niger on Saturday, October 31, 2026, a week after Algeria's parliament authorised sending troops to Niger, RFI reported on Monday, November 2.
According to RFI, the convoy, secured by Algerian soldiers, was joined at the border by elements of Niger's armed forces before the escort and fuel arrived safely in Agadez. Local authorities welcomed the logistical support amid severe strain on fuel supplies.
Cooperation between the two countries also covers economic and security matters, and Algiers is closely watching the influence of foreign countries in the area, the broadcaster said. Citing several sources, RFI said an Algerian unit could be based in Niamey and that a military site in north-eastern Niger, a former French forces headquarters, is expected to host Algerian troops.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had said sending army units to Niger rests on national security considerations, within the framework of cooperation with Niamey.
