Madar (Nouakchott) - The leader of the National Rally for Reform and Development (Tawassoul), Hamadi Ould Sidi El Moctar, said a third presidential term would threaten national unity and cohesion, arguing that it serves neither the interests of the country, the citizen nor the regime, and would be a step back from a major political gain: the peaceful alternation of power.
He was speaking on Saturday evening at the opening of his party's political season.
The Tawassoul leader stressed that the authorities and those calling for a third term must recognise the importance of preserving the constitutional gains won through past struggles, above all the peaceful alternation of power, which he described as the country's safety valve.
He warned that pursuing a course contrary to the constitution's fixed principles and its entrenched articles would threaten security, stability and national cohesion without serving the interests of the citizen, the country or the regime.
He also said statements by officials about a third term amount to a clear violation of the constitution, urging the authorities to realise that those making them could expose themselves to legal accountability for breaching the entrenched constitutional articles.
