Madar (Nouakchott) - Tagant region received 20 billion old ouguiyas in the first phase of the emergency programme for access to essential services, carried out in 2025-2026, Mauritania's equipment and transport minister said on Friday, October 30, 2026, in Tidjikja, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

The minister and the regional governor launched phase-two consultations at the regional council, aimed at assessing phase one and setting priorities for the next interventions.

Phase-one projects in the region covered education, health, water, electricity, agriculture, livestock, roads, jobs and youth empowerment. The minister said completing the planned projects "does not necessarily mean" all needs are met, and called for priorities to be set commune by commune.

The regional council president, the mayor of Tidjikja and the head of the region's mayors' association praised the participatory approach, while participants presented residents' demands from municipal petitions.

The Tagant consultations are part of the ministerial missions' regional tour, which also opened in Hodh Ech Chargui and Tiris Zemmour, with phase two due to start early next year.
