Madar (Nouakchott) - Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay described the efforts to develop youth and sports facilities as "exceptional", saying the resources mobilised for these projects aim to give young people suitable spaces to practise sport and develop their skills.

In a statement on Saturday after a field tour of several sports facilities in Nouakchott, he said the El Mina stadium is undergoing provisional handover, praising its improvements and noting that it can hold a thousand spectators.

He also spoke of progress on the covered multi-sports hall in Arafat district, which has 600 seats, saying the contractor has committed to completing the remaining work within about two weeks so it can be put into service.

The programme also includes two sports halls to the same specifications in Kaedi and Kiffa, preparations for a tender for a similar hall in Nouakchott, and plans for another hall in the capital under a later project.

On the proximity pitches programme, Ould Djay said about 14 pitches have been completed, with work continuing on more than 20 pitches in Nouakchott and about 20 more in the interior.

He said the projects are part of the commitment to build 100 proximity pitches, ordered by the president at the youth congress held last November, to widen young people's access to sports facilities.
