Madar (Nouakchott) - The governor of Dakhlet Nouadhibou, Tfeila Mohamedene Hadene, on Tuesday morning, November 3, 2026, launched the second phase of the Nouadhibou city clean-up campaign, which will last two weeks, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

The campaign involves the Baie du Repos port, the Nouadhibou Autonomous Port, the companies responsible for cleaning the city and civil society, as part of the national cleanliness drive launched in response to President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani's call in Benichab.

The governor said the first phase eliminated informal dumps in Nouadhibou and Chami, cleared some 200 spots where rubbish had piled up for years and removed nearly 4,000 tonnes of waste, while collection points around public facilities were filled in with white soil.

She said the new phase should consolidate and preserve what had been achieved, which requires the contribution of all citizens, adding that keeping the surroundings of public facilities clean is the responsibility of those who run them.

She asked the cleaning companies to maintain the gains, organise monitoring patrols and designate and fence off official collection points to prevent new dumping sites, and urged residents to put household waste in the designated places.
